2008 Preview
Things to do in Atlanta
The next edition of the National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Game will take place from January 26 - 27, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia. Following a very successful 2007 All-Star Game in Dallas, Texas, the game stays in the South, but moves east to one of the U.S.'s greatest sports destination cities.
Atlanta's capacity for hosting world class sporting events comes from the city's world-class infrastructure, authentic Southern hospitality and a sporting history that has been nurtured for more that 100 years.
Atlanta is one of busiest cities in America. For an example of just how busy this city is, check this out: By accommodating 84.8 million passengers and 976,447 flights, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport held its ranking as the world's busiest airport in 2006, both in terms of passengers and number of flights.
Atlanta also hosted the 1996 Olympic Games. Being awarded these games helped move Atlanta into the modern city it is today. In order to accommodate the many events taking place at the Games, the city had to upgrade many of its sporting facilities.
Examples of this are the mid-rise dormitories built for the Olympic village. One of these complexes became the first residential housing for Georgia State University, and has recently been transferred for use by the Georgia Institute of Technology. Other examples include Turner Field, which was a modification of the original Centennial Olympic Stadium, and where the Atlanta Braves baseball team now makes its home. Centennial Olympic Park was also built for the events and is still in use.
Atlanta is also home to a thriving culture scene and nightlife. Whether you are looking for world-class musical artists, art galleries, restaurants and other entertainment establishments, look for them Downtown. And if sports is what you need, Atlanta is your city. Atlanta is home to pro teams for the National Basketball Association, National Football League, Major League Baseball, East Coast Hockey League, and of course, the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL. This is the place to discover what's happening.
No Fishing Allowed! The Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest aquarium, includes eight million gallons of fresh and marine water and is home to more than 100,000 animals representing 500 species from around the globe.
